Wacaco Nanopresso Review
Which Wacaco did we go with?
We review the Wacaco Nanopresso portable espresso coffee machine.
We have had the Wacaco Nanopresso now for over 12 months and have used it lots. It’s been taken on many day trips and camping adventures. Overall we are really happy with it but there are a few things you need to know if you are considering buying one which we will address through this post.
So we went with the Nanopresso option that uses ground coffee rather than coffee pods. We use coffee beans at home so this made sense for us. The coffee pod version though will be far easier to use and a lot less hassle as you’ll see when we take you through how this works. They are under $100, ours was on sale, bought online. The Wacaco Nanopresso comes in a really nice case that is lined well and protects it from any damage. Everything you needs is packed away in the water end of the unit being a small cleaning brush and the measuring spoon that also works as a tamper.
How does it work?
So how does it work? Basically you fill hot water in the one end up to the measuring line, add coffee to the porta filter, close the unit and then pump until all water has passed through. That is it in a nut shell.
In detail this is exactly what you do. Start boiling your water. While your water is boiling, grind your coffee nice and fine exactly as you would usually do for an espresso.
Once coffee has been ground and your water boiled you can prime the unit before use. Remove the water cup end and fill to the measuring line and attach to the unit and twist to lock in place. Then pump all the hot water through the unit into your coffee cup. Now that the unit is primed, remove the porta filter end by turning it anti clockwise. Use the measuring spoon to get the correct amount of ground coffee. Add the coffee to the porta filter. Then using the back off the measuring spoon as a tamper, pack the coffee down nice and firm. Place the porta filter in place and screw on the end of the Nanopresso.
Fill up the water to the measuring line (as done previously when priming the unit) and then add this and lock in to place. Now pump the Nanopresso with one pump per second and the coffee will slowly seep through. Continue to pump until all water has passed through the machine. You will be left with a nice looking coffee shot with a bit of crema on top.
It’s all about the grind!
Getting the grind and the quantity correct is essential. If you pack too much coffee then you will have to pump super hard and it will take forever. If the grind is too course it’ll be easy to pump but your coffee won’t be great. We use a Portlex grinder and set this to the finest grind setting and this works right for us. The perfect amount of coffee should be enough to fill the measuring cup.
Get the pod version if you don’t use coffee beans at home!
In this last part of our Wacaco Nanopresso review we highlight what is involved in cleaning the unit and which version you should buy.
Cleaning the Nanopresso is a bit painful. Getting the coffee out of the porta filter takes a while and you need to use the end of the supplied brush or a knife or spoon to assist. You then need to rinse everything out thoroughly. If you used the coffee pod version cleaning would be far easier and you’d save a whole lot of time without having to grind the coffee and trying to get the right quantity.
Then again we use this while we are camping out at the beach and aren’t really in much of a rush so it doesn’t bother us at all. We also have a coffee machine at home and use coffee beans so this machine makes sense for us. If you use a coffee pod machine at home then the coffee pod option would be best for you.
