Land Cruiser Build Exhaust Upgrade
Exhaust Upgrade
The next part of the Land Cruiser build ended up being an exhaust upgrade.
An exhaust upgrade wasn’t really on the cards but fortunately I have a good relationship with Jordan at Speedy Towbars. Speedy used to be called Speedy Exhaust and Towbars and as a result they have relationships with a bunch of exhaust suppliers and the people to fit one. I only planned on upgrading my exhaust when I decide to do a tune performance upgrade and that is only going to occur once my warranty runs out.
So Jordan tapped me on the shoulder while they were installing my tow bar and let me know that he could get a stainless 3 inch exhaust delivered in under an hour and have it fitted in less than 20 minutes. Once he told me what he’d charge me I couldn’t say no. So the next part of the Land Cruiser build ended up being a new exhaust upgrade, which was delivered and installed in exactly the time he had said.
I hadn’t realised how easy an exhaust change is to do if you have a hoist and a few people to help. So the old exhaust was out in a matter of minutes, the new one was delivered on the back of a Ute and the end of the exhaust quickly painted black as a result of my request. Not too long after that a new 3 inch stainless exhaust with no muffler had been fitted.
We started Big Betty and I was quite happy with the end result. I never wanted a lot of noise and this delivered. Put your foot down and there is a really good growl but while cruising there is just a slight purr. No loud road noise which is exactly what I wanted. On the first drive I did notice a small performance improvement, nothing crazy but definitely a bit more power. When I get a throttle controller installed it will then be perfect.
If you are after a lot of noise then I would definitely go with a 4 inch upgrade as you probably won’t be satisfied with the 3 inch. Do not install a muffler as the DPF acts as one. Overall I am really happy with the end result as I am not after a really noisy 4WD.

Looks nice, so they told you that a 3 inch exhaust won’t affect warranty?
By a “tune performance upgrade” do you mean a chip?
I just ordered a 76, it will arrive at Christmas. I’ve found your blog a good resource!

G’day Chris,
Thanks mate appreciate that. Should have a few more build posts up soon to help out. We are a bit behind on some of the build updates.
Yeah they said the 3” won’t be an issue with warranty. DPF still there. Basically all the discussions we have had with Toyota at Sunshine Toyota has been as long as that modification didn’t directly cause the issue then warranty is not affected.
With tune we mean a custom dyno tune. We will have a post up on the dyno tune soon as well.
Let us know if you have any other questions re the 76 and build. Always happy to help out, we get quite a few messages so happy to help out where we can. Exciting times ahead for you mate, going to be one ripper Christmas. The build is always fun.
Thanks mate.
Cheers
Peter

Great, thanks Peter, an exhaust upgrade is one of the cheaper ones that I can do earlier. I’m happy to hear it’s not too loud either.
Look forward to hearing about how the tune goes. Getting the best possible fuel economy is the main reason I would be interested in doing this.
Cheers,
Chris.
