Quick and Easy Camp Oven Beef and Pork Nachos
In this recipe post we share with you our quick and easy camp oven beef and pork nachos recipe. We have also included a simple variation that does not require a camp oven when you are after an even quicker and easier meal while on the road. The variation is one we cook regularly while touring and get to camp late in the day and do not want to spend much time cooking.
Gear We Use
When cooking camp oven beef and pork nachos this is what we use:
- Camp Chef 10-inch cast iron camp oven / dutch oven.
- Camp Chef heat and fire-resistant gloves.
- Good hot coals.
- Zebra Pro stainless steel knife and Drifta leather cover.
- Chopping board.
- Wooden spoon.
When cooking our simple variation without a camp oven this is what we use:
- Frying pan.
- Gas cooker.
- Zebra Pro stainless steel knife and Drifta leather cover.
- Chopping board.
- Wooden spoon.
Camp Oven Beef & Pork Nachos Ingredients
The below ingredients are for two people, so change them as required. We try and keep our ingredients as simple as possible as it makes packing and cooking that much easier. Our recommendation if you can, is to prepare the ingredients before you leave making your time at camp that much easier with clean up, rubbish, and prep work required.
- 125 grams x premium beef mince.
- 125 grams x pork mince.
- 1 x Taco spice mix (you can make your own but easier to buy the pre-mix).
- ½ x brown onion chopped.
- 1 x garlic glove chopped finely.
- ½ can x Heinz chilli beans.
- ½ can x diced tomato.
- Plain or cheese flavoured corn chips.
- Olive oil.
- Grated cheese.
- Greek yoghurt.
You can leave out the pork mince and double the portion of beef mince if you prefer. You can also remove the diced tomato and replace with a squeeze of tomato paste. If using tomato paste instead of diced tomato, you will need to add a few splashes of water to get a better sauce. Diced tomato helps give a much better sauce, so we recommend using this instead of tomato paste. If cooking for two, as we are above, and using ½ can of something, we find that doing this at home before you leave is better. In a plastic container, add ½ the can of diced tomato and chill beans and mix. You can then store the rest in your fridge at home. When at camp if you have any leftovers, you can reuse this plastic container to store them.
Cook Time
- Preparation – 2-5 minutes.
- Cook Time – 15-20 minutes.
Cooking Camp Oven Beef & Pork Nachos
Heat up you camp oven and then add some olive. Once the oil is hot, throw in the chopped onion and garlic and cook for a few minutes until nice and soft. Then add the beef and pork mince, or beef mince only if you prefer. Cook for approximately 5 minutes until the beef and pork have browned.
Then add the whole packet of the Taco spice mix and stir so that the spice mix has combined with the meat and onions. Then add the chilli beans and diced tomato and stir together. Let the beef and pork mix cook for 3-5 minutes. Once the mix is cooked and nice and hot, remove from the camp oven and store on a plate or back in the plastic container that you had your chilli beans and diced tomatoes.
Now layer the bottom of the camp oven with corn chips. Then add a layer of the beef and pork mix. Cover this with grated cheese. Then add another layer of corn chips, beef and pork mix, and grated cheese. Depending on how many people you are cooking for, you might need to do more than two layers of each.
Place the lid on top of the camp oven and add the camp oven to the hot coals. Add a good layer of coals on top of the lid. You want more coals on top than on the bottom. Work on a 70 to 30 ratio of top to bottom. Now cook for 8-10 minutes. Remove the camp oven lid and the cheese should be melted. If not melted enough, add the camp oven lid, and cook for a few more minutes.
Serve using a large spoon or eat directly from the camp oven. For a touch of class, add a little Greek yoghurt on top or sour cream if you prefer. This is such a simple but delicious camp oven meal that everyone should try.
Cooking Beef & Pork Nachos Without a Camp Oven
If you do not have a camp oven or want to cook this meal even quicker, then try this simple variation. The only real difference being you won’t get nice, melted cheese and slightly fried corn chips.
Follow the above camp oven recipe to cook the onions, garlic, beef, and pork in a frying pan. Add the Taco spice mix and other ingredients as per above. Once everything is cooked, throw some corn chips on a plate and cover with the beef and pork mix. Then sprinkle with grated cheese and few dollops of Greek yoghurt or sour cream. It is that simple and still tastes great but, not anywhere near as good as the camp oven recipe above.
