Chocolate Bananas the Easiest & Best Dessert
We like to call this “chocolatey bananas” and it is a campfire dessert that will get everyone excited on any camping trip. It is extremely simple requiring only two to three ingredients and no gear other an aluminium foil, fire gloves, and tongs. The photos of this dessert, no matter how you try and take them, do not do any justice to how this dessert tastes, we promise.
The Gear You Need
You do not need much to cook campfire chocolate bananas. The three key items are a campfire with lots of hot coals, aluminium foil, and tongs. If you do have fire gloves or oven gloves, we do recommend using them as your hand will get extremely hot by the fire.
- A good campfire.
- Aluminium foil.
- Tongs.
- Fire or oven gloves although not necessary.
Ingredients for Campfire Chocolate Bananas
You only need two ingredients to cook campfire chocolate bananas or chocolatey bananas. That is a bar of milk chocolate and bananas. If you want to get real fancy and unhealthier, cream is amazing with this, although not necessary. We hardly ever carry cream when camping so we only ever use cream when making this at home in the oven.
- 1 x banana for each person.
- 1 x block of milk chocolate* using 8-10 squares per banana.
- Cream if you want way more calories.
- Cook time – 20 minutes.
* Our chocolate recommendation is a coconut chocolate block by Whittaker’s from New Zealand. You can pick up this chocolate at any of the supermarkets in Australia. Using this chocolate does not require any cream as the chocolate is already super creamy. One of our favourite chocolates of all time! However, any milk chocolate will work fine.
Making Campfire Chocolate Bananas
Making campfire chocolate bananas is extremely easy. For each banana you want a piece of aluminium foil about the size of an A4 piece of paper. Place a whole peeled banana in the middle of the aluminium foil. Then break up the chocolate block into individual squares.
Now take the chocolate squares and push these into the banana. You should use about four to five chocolate squares depending on the size of the banana. Evenly space them out across the banana. Now place an additional four to five chocolate squares onto the aluminium foil on either side of the banana.
Once all the chocolate squares have been added to the banana, you will now need to seal the aluminium foil. To do this, simply fold up the sides of the aluminium foil ensuring you seal the top with additional folds as needed. You want to make sure you will be able to easily open the foil when cooked, but also not let any of the chocolate leak out. We try and have the foil sealed on top of the banana rather than underneath if that makes sense.
Repeat this process for each campfire chocolate banana.
Now find a spot on the side of the campfire where there are lots of hot coals. You might need to move some of the burning wood slightly. Then using fire gloves (or oven gloves) and tongs, place the banana in aluminium foil beside the hot coals of the campfire. Do not place on top of the coals. You want to place the banana about an inch or 5cms from the coals to ensure nothing burns.
After 10 minutes, using your fire gloves and tongs, turn the banana 180 degrees to heat the opposite side. Wait for another 10 minutes before removing the chocolate bananas from your campfire.
Open the aluminium foil and check each banana is nice and soft and the chocolate has melted. Some of the chocolate gets a little crunchy which is what you want. You can either eat the chocolate banana in the aluminium foil or remove with a spoon and serve in a bowl. If you have cream, add it now. You want to mix it all up a bit before enjoying this ultimate camping dessert.
Photos of campfire chocolate bananas are hard to make look good, but believe us when we say, this is one camping dessert you are going to want to try. It tastes fantastic and is ridiculously easy to make. And it has got fruit so it must be a little healthy…just a little.
Remember, you can always try this one at home in the oven as well. The method does not change. Cook for the same amount of time at around 200 degrees.
