Snow Peak Folding Chopping Board Set Review: 5 Years of Use
Snow Peak Folding Chopping Board Set Review
When it comes to camp cooking, there are two types of gear: the cheap stuff you buy to “get by,” and the gear you buy once, rely on for years, and quietly congratulate yourself on every single trip. The Snow Peak Folding Chopping Board Set (Medium Size) firmly belongs in the latter category.
After more than five years of constant use, it has earned permanent residency in the very top of our rear drawers in the 76 Series Land Cruiser. It’s one of those bits of kit that, once you own it, you wonder how you ever travelled without it. Compact, beautifully made, and paired with a ridiculously sharp, high‑quality knife, this chopping board has become one of our most-used pieces of camp cooking gear, especially for lunches and quick meals when we’re on the road.
Yes, it’s expensive. Yes, Snow Peak gear in Australia is notoriously hard to get your hands on. But when something lasts this long, performs this well, and makes camp life easier every single day, the cost quickly fades into the background.
Here’s our full review.
About the Snow Peak Folding Chopping Board Set
Snow Peak is known for building gear that borders on over‑engineered. Their approach is simple: make equipment that will outlast the user. The Folding Chopping Board Set is a perfect example of that philosophy in action.
Specs – Medium Size
- Open: 254 mm x 203 mm x 19 mm
- Closed: 254 mm x 102 mm x 38 mm
- Weight: 450 g
- Board Material: Natural birch wood
- Knife Material: High-carbon vanadium stainless steel
- Made in: Japan
The chopping board folds in half like a book, and the included knife stores safely inside, held securely by a strong internal magnet. The design is simple, clever, and genuinely practical for daily travel use.
In typical Snow Peak fashion, the materials are top‑tier. The birch wood cutting surface feels solid and natural, not plasticky or flimsy like cheaper options. And the knife? It’s properly sharp. Not “good for a camping knife” sharp, but “keep your fingers out of the way” sharp. After five years, ours still cuts like a blade half its age.
A Closer Look at the Design
Foldable Form Factor
The folding design is what makes this product such a win for camping travel. Instead of dealing with an awkward flat full‑size board, this one folds into a compact rectangle you can slip inside drawers, bags, or a dedicated storage pouch.
We keep ours paired with a Drifta storage bag. Together, the combo is hard to beat for durability and packability.
Secure Knife Storage
Inside the folded board is a strong magnet that locks the knife in place. It’s surprisingly strong, strong enough that even when we’ve bounced down corrugated tracks for hours, the knife has never once shifted.
This means:
- No loose knives floating around drawers
- No dedicated storage block
- No need for a sheath
- And incredibly quick access
For camp cooking efficiency, those seconds count, especially when you’re preparing lunch on the side of the track or on our Svnty Offroad rear barn door table.
Materials Built to Last
Birch wood is a brilliant choice: durable, resistant to splitting, and naturally pleasant to cut on. Like any wood board, it needs occasional oiling. We generally treat ours with grapeseed oil, which has kept it in excellent condition across years of use.
All Snow Peak products are backed by a lifetime warranty, and while we’ve never needed to test it, the peace of mind adds to the confidence you get with their gear. Snow Peak gear isn’t cheap, because it isn’t cheaply made.
Our Personal Experience
We’ve used this chopping board for over five years, and it has become one of our most valued pieces of cooking gear, on par with our favourite Uni-Flame cooking set, and camp oven.
Here’s how it performs in real-world use.
Cooking on the Road
When we stop for lunch on the road, accessing this board is effortless. Stored in the top drawer of our Drifta rear drawers, we can grab it and be slicing ingredients within seconds. The integrated knife means no rummaging around for tools or risking loose blades in camp storage.
Size & Use Cases
The medium size is great for:
- Sandwiches
- Veg prep
- Small meals
- Quick camp lunches
Occasionally, we’ve wished for the large size, mostly when prepping bigger cuts of meat or larger dinner ingredients. For dinners at camp, we often switch to a thin HDPE cutting board that slots beside our drawers. But for 80% of daily use, the medium Snow Peak board covers everything we need.
If you mostly prep small to medium meals, the medium is perfect. If you’re regularly cutting big steaks, roasts, or bulky veg, the large might be the better option.
Knife Quality
This knife is honestly fantastic. It’s sharp enough to rival proper home kitchen knives, holds its edge extremely well, and makes slicing effortless. Snow Peak uses high-carbon vanadium stainless steel, and it shows in the performance.
We’ve never had to replace or repair it. Just standard sharpening, and it’s good to go.
Durability
After half a decade on the road:
- The board still opens and closes perfectly
- The magnet remains as strong as day one
- The wood has no cracks or splits
- The knife shows no corrosion
- The hinges still align cleanly
This thing is built to survive years of rough handling, dust, humidity, and constant travel vibration.
Packability
The folding format makes a massive difference when packing a touring setup. When space is at a premium, clever gear like this saves space without compromising usability. Pairing this with the Drifta storage bag is a must for any touring rig setup.
We never leave on a trip without it.

Overall Verdict
The Snow Peak Folding Chopping Board Set (Medium) earns a full 5/5 rating from us.
Despite the price, despite the scarcity in Australia, and despite the temptation to get the larger size, this chopping board has been an absolute winner in our camping setup. We’ve used it on every significant trip, on day runs, on multi‑week adventures, and everywhere in between.
It’s premium gear that performs as good as it looks. Snow Peak backs it with a lifetime warranty, and based on our half-decade of use, we suspect we’ll be handing this board down to someone someday.
