BruTrek Ovrlndr Travel Press – The Best Travel Camping Coffee Plunger for the Rugged Adventurer
When you’re waking up to a frosty morning in the bush or settling into camp after a long day on the tracks, few things hit the spot like a hot, freshly brewed coffee. Over the years, we’ve tested countless brewing setups, from the Nanopresso to the AeroPress, one product has stood out for its ruggedness, reliability, and ease of use: the BruTrek Ovrlndr Travel Press.
If you’re searching for the best travel camping coffee plunger, this one deserves a serious look. It’s not just a coffee maker, it’s a purpose-built tool for adventurers who not only care about their brew, but they also care about having a hot brew!
Built for the Road, Ready for the Bush
The BruTrek Ovrlndr Travel Press is made from brushed stainless steel, which we prefer over painted finishes that tend to flake and wear over time. It’s tough, durable, and built to handle the rigours of remote travel. We’ve had ours bouncing around in drawers, thrown in the back of hired 4WDs in Africa, and even dropped multiple times, no dents, no drama.
Our first unit was so good it got “borrowed” permanently by a mate in Zimbabwe on our last African trip. He was so impressed with the brew quality and build that he couldn’t let it go. We’ve since replaced it with a new one, and it’s just as solid.
Tip: The Ovrlndr Travel Press is available in brushed stainless steel and other painted colour finishes. Our recommendation is to stick with the brushed stainless. While we haven’t tested the painted versions of this specific product, we’ve seen paint flake off even high-end water bottles over time. So, we’d assume the same could happen here, especially with heavy use in rugged environments.
Hot Brews That Last for Hours
One of the standout features is the double-wall insulated stainless steel construction. Whether you’re brewing coffee or tea, the Ovrlndr Travel Press keeps your drink hot for hours. This is a game-changer on cold mornings when you want to sip slowly without rushing before it cools down.
It holds 700ml, which translates to about three decent cups, perfect for sharing with your travel mates or enjoying solo throughout the morning. The spill-proof, heat-retentive lid locks in warmth and keeps out dust and dirt, making it ideal for rugged outdoor use.
Coffee or Tea - Your Choice
While it’s marketed as a French press, the Ovrlndr is just as effective for loose-leaf tea. We’ve used it to brew everything from strong black teas to herbal blends, and the results are consistently clean and flavourful. The fine mesh Bru-Stop plunger ensures that no grounds or leaves sneak into your cup, giving you a smooth, grit-free drink every time.
Our Camp Coffee Routine
Now, while we love the Ovrlndr Travel Press, our preferred camp coffee brewing method is still the AeroPress. We haven’t found anything that makes as good a coffee as the AeroPress, especially when it comes to flavour clarity and strength. But that doesn’t stop us from using the Ovrlndr Travel Press, it is far easier and still makes a damn good coffee.
Our usual coffee morning routine is simple: we get a big batch of coffee brewing in the Ovrlndr Travel Press, and while that sits and steeps, we make a large AeroPress for our first cup to share. The Ovrldnr Travel Press then stays hot and ready for our second and third cups, which we enjoy over the next hour or so, be it still in camp or now on the road. It’s a great system that balances convenience with quality.
Smart Design for Easy Clean-Up
Let’s be honest, cleaning a French press is usually a messy chore. But the Ovrlndr Travel Press has this solved with a removable bottom section. After brewing, the grounds settle neatly at the base. Just unscrew the bottom, dump the grinds, rinse, and you’re done.
One small tip: Be careful when unscrewing, as a bit of brew can get trapped in the bottom section (due to the extremely fine mesh of the plunger and Bru-Stop). A gentle twist avoids spills and keeps clean-up hassle-free. The other hack we have discovered, is when pouring that final coffee, push and pull the plunger slightly and you will find that most of that brew that was sitting at the bottom does escape, making clean up a little easier.

The BruTrek Ovrldnr Travel Press isn’t just another coffee gadget, it’s a reliable, rugged, and versatile brewing tool that fits perfectly into any camp setup. Whether you’re deep in the bush, parked up at a roadside stop, or just enjoying a quiet morning in the backyard, this press delivers.
It’s not a replacement for our AeroPress, but it’s an excellent companion. It makes brewing for multiple people easy, keeps coffee hot for hours, and simplifies clean-up. If you’re serious about your camp brews and want gear that lasts, the Ovrldnr Travel Press is hands-down the best travel camping coffee plunger we’ve found.
Although we do find that a bit of the brew gets stuck in the bottom section with the coffee grinds, overall, it’s a fantastic product.
Highly recommended.
