Camp Chef Pro30X Gas Cooker Review
Camp Chef Pro30X Gas Cooker Review
Disclosure: We did not pay for this cooker or the accessories, Camp Chef supplied them free of charge for testing. We were not paid or asked to write this review. The opinions below are based on our real‑world use over several years so you can decide whether this cooking system suits your setup.
Introduction
Outdoor cooking is one of the real joys of camping in Australia, whether it’s a quick weekend away, a desert crossing, or cooking for a crowd at home. Over the past few years, we’ve used and tested countless cookers across the country, and one unit that continues to stand out, despite its quirks, is the Camp Chef Pro30X 14″ Stove Cooking System.
This Camp Chef Pro30X review dives into what this cooker does well, where it doesn’t quite fit the Australian style of camping, how it performs with accessories, and why we still use ours every single week.

About the Gear
The Camp Chef Pro30X is built around a powerful 30,000 BTU cast‑aluminium burner, giving you serious heat output for fast cooking. Core features include:
- Heavy-duty cast‑aluminium burner
- Detachable steel legs
- Folding side shelf
- 3 ft. hose and regulator
- 36cm x 42cm cooking surface
- 79cm cooking height
- ~10 kg overall weight
- Compatible with Camp Chef’s 14″ accessories
- One‑year warranty
The build quality is solid, and the appliance‑style temperature control makes it easy to use, even for finer cooking tasks.
A Cooker Designed for Americans (And Their Tailgating Culture)
It becomes obvious pretty quickly that the Camp Chef Pro30X is designed by Americans for American tailgating, big vehicles, big storage, cooking for a crowd before a game. That isn’t really our camping culture in Australia, especially for weight‑conscious 4WD touring where space is precious and everything must justify its place.
So, while the Pro30X is brilliantly versatile and a lot of fun to cook on, it’s not the choice for a minimalist touring kit. It’s bulky, the accessories are bulkier still, and this design philosophy screams tailgate party more than remote‑area touring. With that said, in the right context, it’s fantastic.
Setup Experience
Setup is simple and quick:
- Insert legs: Slide on the detachable legs (with optional leg levellers) and hand‑tighten the thumb screws.
- Gas connection: Attach the hose to a gas bottle.
- Ignition: Use the front lighting port with a long‑nose lighter and bring the knob up from LOW.
The cast‑aluminium burner resists rust, flame control is smooth, and most yellow‑flame issues vanish by opening the air shutter for a clean, hot blue flame.
Our Personal Experience
We’ve used the Camp Chef Pro30X for over three years, and it has seen everything, from outback dust to coastal humidity to weekly balcony cooking at home.
On the Road – Outback Trips & Touring
We first took the Pro30X across the Simpson Desert along the Madigan Line in our 76 Series Land Cruiser. When set up, it felt like having a commercial kitchen in the middle of nowhere:
- Quick heat from the 30,000 BTU burner.
- Happy handling of a heavy 12” cast iron camp oven.
- The massive griddle turned out full cooked breakfasts, bacon, eggs, sausages, for a group of us with ease.
But there’s no getting around the downside: it’s big and it’s heavy. On long touring trips where weight and storage matter, it simply didn’t earn its spot in the vehicle.
That’s why, for extended touring in our 4WD only, we prefer camp oven meals, cooking over coals using our foldable firepit, and using a small lightweight single butane gas burner for other meals. For boiling water, we use our jet cooker. Smaller packed footprint suits our cooking style, and just simpler for long trips.
In long trips with our camper trailer DOT373, we also carry our Weber Baby Q as we have the space for it.
Pizza Nights – The Star of the Show
The pizza oven accessory is the standout for us. It gets seriously hot and cooks thin‑crust pizzas in minutes. It’s so good we use it almost every single week at home. When friends come over, we can turn out pizza after pizza faster than the kitchen oven, with that crisp base that makes everyone happy.
Cooking Big Meals – The Griddle
The griddle (hot plate) is our second favourite accessory. On one outback trip, we knocked out a meal favourite, our Desert Chilli (find the recipe here), which has onions, mince, bacon and fried eggs cooking all at the same time – a large amount of food! When you’re feeding a group, the griddle’s huge surface and even heat make life easy.
Where It Fits in Our Setup Today
- Weekly at home (pizza oven, and occasionally the griddle)
- Short weekend trips with the camper trailer, when storage is available
- Not for long touring due to size and weight
- Brilliant for caravans and camper trailers with proper storage
Think of it less as a hardcore weight conscious touring cooker and more as an outdoor entertainment system that just happens to be portable.
Accessories Overview
This cooking system shines brightest when paired with accessories:
- Pizza Oven – Outstanding – If you buy one accessory, make it this. Fast, fun, and delicious.
- Griddle – Group Cooking Made Easy – Excellent heat spread, huge surface, ideal for big breakfasts and batch cooking.
- BBQ Box – Not Tested by Us Yet – Designed for those wanting a more traditional BBQ approach on the Pro30X.
Note on size: Each accessory increases the packed volume significantly. If storage is limited, choose carefully.
Also worth noting: Camp Chef makes a larger double‑burner unit in this family. It’s even bigger and heavier, but for large families or serious outdoor cooks needing two hot zones at once, it could be the better fit, if you’ve got the space.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Incredibly powerful 30,000 BTU burner
- Fun, versatile cooking experience
- Pizza oven is genuinely impressive
- Griddle is brilliant for large meals
- Solid construction that can take abuse
- Freestanding design with detachable legs
- Ideal for home use and weekend camping
Cons
- Bulky and heavy – especially with accessories
- Not suited to minimalist, weight‑conscious touring
- Accessories add substantial storage demands
Summary of Key Points
- Clearly American tailgating DNA – big power, big fun, big accessories
- Not a minimalist’s cooker; storage and weight are the trade‑offs
- Fantastic cooking experience when set up, especially with the pizza oven and griddle
- Best for weekend trips, home use, caravans/camper trailers with storage
- We use ours weekly at home, and occasionally take it on short trips; for long tours with our camper trailer, the Weber Baby Q + butane cooker fits our style better
Overall Verdict
The Camp Chef Pro30X is an excellent cooking system if it suits your setup and how you like to cook. It’s powerful, versatile, and a lot of fun to cook on. It’s just not built for minimalist touring. If you’ve got the storage and love cooking outdoors, you won’t be disappointed if you use the additional accessories.
